My mania for
recording new music began at the end of the 1970s and has persisted throughout
my life.
At various
times, I have attempted to bring together that which is worth saving to
transfer to a new format.
Often I have
used advancing technologies to re-edit or re-mix my earlier stuff and finally
get it heard.
These
endeavours have resulted in this catalogue of home-produced CD-Rs and some
lathe cut records.
ALL the
material listed here has been preserved digitally and I would be happy to send
any track or album as
MP3s to
anyone that requests them; tell me what you'd like and your preferred email
address and
I will send
them FOC. No catch; I'm a long way past trying to make a living as a musician;
The Raz
Chronicles
have effectively been recorded in secret; some with friends though mostly alone
in the corner
of a
bedroom or a dining room under a pair of headphones. There may have been times
when I thought that
I could earn
money from what I was doing but ultimately, I just wanted it to be listened to.
Please note
that I may have to withdraw the offer if I get inundated and the offer is only
valid while I'm alive.
For my own
convenience, I put my recorded work into four basic mental compartments:
Songs written by me; instrumental music composed and played by me; collaborative songs
(or instrumental music) and sample-based music to which I make no active contribution other
than
selecting,
programming and editing sounds from old vinyl or other sources.
The vast
majority of my material falls into the latter category; during the 1990s I
grasped the
basic
principles of sampling and developed a fascination with mixing sounds from
different genres.
I was able
to make these tracks in my own time whilst holding down a day job. All that
I required
was a regular supply of second-hand records from charity shops and car boot sales.
This supply
seemed to dry up by the end of the noughties as the bargains were snapped-up by
unscrupulous
dealers, so I turned to YouTube as an infinite resource of beats, sounds and
dialogue.
Until about
2005, I had called myself 'Raz' but with the need to make a distinction between
my
songwriting and my computer experiments; I
acquired the name 'Mitchel Devastation'.
I used both
these names (and others) on MySpace but dropped the latter when I discovered
that a
Salisbury
band had used the name spelt with two Ls. After operating briefly under the
name; 'Garnet
South Mimms'
I resorted to becoming 'The Landfill Harmonic' (which I had originally
envisaged as a live act).
This was to
serve me well (getting me on BBC 6Music for the first and only time) until I
found that my unique "google whack"
name had
been used as the title of a film released in 2015. The film centred on poor
communities in South America and
I quickly
found that my various Landfill Harmonic pages were gaining followers from that
part of the world.
I did my
best to explain to them that they had been misled but the damage was already
done.
The film's
makers claimed it was a "coincidence". For a while I complained to their
Facebook site and
I reinforced
my Landfill Harmonic postings on Soundcloud, Mixcloud and Reverbnation but
eventually
conceded
that this feisty and conceited response was not really consistent with my
decent geezer image.
My old
friend Ed Rennie was the first to call me 'Raz', probably around 1979. However
I was to remain John
Revell until
I had some kind of protracted mid-life crisis in the nineties. I travelled a
bit and broke out of
Basingstoke;
I studied French and Italian at University in London and experienced new
things.
I wanted to
be a different person; a better person. Whether the world around me thinks that
Raz is a
better
person than John; I cannot say but the latter remains responsible for my
dealings with the Council, the
NHS or any official nonsense while Raz strives to be the artist. It is a habit he cannot break.
